Catering is that form of business where remote areas are provided with foodservice. In other words, foodservice is available to distant or isolated places. In case of mobile catering, food is served directly from a vehicle or any other form of transport which is used for the purpose of catering. Some common places where mobile catering is popular are concerts, downtown business places, workplaces and other outdoor events. Such events include full-service catering and box-lunch drop-off. The caterers and the staff who work for them belong to the food service industry and are expected to work for long hours. They are especially required during holiday seasons. Although, the responsibility of preparing the food is not on the event caterer staff, they do help out with the dinning area. Such events include weddings, conventions and banquets.

Due to this reason, many catering companies have opted for a full-service business model in collaboration with event planners. Thereby, they take responsibility of the food preparation, lighting, table settings and other decorations. If required, they also work on color schemes or the entire theme. This is basically because catering companies intend to satisfy their clients completely with food as the central motive. The correct ambiance makes the event memorable and helps in the popularity of the catering company.

Catering services are also offered on merchant ships such as ferries, large cargo ships and cruise liners. The Merchant Navy catering officers supervise the purchase and preparation of the food and drinks, and serve it to the passengers and crew members. They also oversee the accommodation services, which include laundry, provision of linen and bedding. They are completely accountable for keeping records, payment of wages, immigration records and are basically in charge of the administration.
